Five Immediate Benefits of a Reiki Session

Sketching Garden Ideas

Image
As I drive back and forth between my new and old homes, I pass through an agricultural area. Driving through here always inspires me to build a garden. I have watched several documentaries about urban farming, and their point is often it doesn't take much space or money to get started. I think about the practicality of trying to build a small, portable garden. As I am driving, I am envisioning what this could be.

Feeling Rudderless

Image
They say that home is where the heart is. I have recently chosen to be homeless.

I suppose that isn't exactly what I am. I live in a 5th wheel trailer, and have been able to move to a beautiful new location in the tropics. During this transition, though, I am moving back and forth between cities. It is difficult to accept my new location, because I am not finished in my old home.

I feel restless and unsettled. I cannot take my pup with me as I travel back and forth. My children are in different cities. My man is in my new location. My friends are in my old locations. My loyalties are torn.

I suppose it is because I wasn't quite ready to make the change. That isn't to say that I am unhappy with recent developments. On the contrary, I am thrilled that I am able to move into an area that I have wanted to be for many years. It is just that I have so many loose ends to tie up. I have been living in two cities, and I see it continuing for some time.

As I am writing this, I do r…

What Happens on the Other Side of the Missed Call to Your Massage Therapist

Image
As I am in the last 15 minutes of a massage, a light catches my eye. My cell phone has just received a call. I can barely make out that it looks like a potential client. I'm happy because I know that I have a light day, and could probably fit another person in.

Reiki - What Is it? Would it Help Me?

Image
Reiki is, very simply, the channeling of Universal energy by a Reiki practitioner, through your body to effect personal healing. Essentially, it is like airing out your energetic signature. We are energetic beings, broken down into molecules and atoms at our very essence of being. Through encounters with others, pollution, negativity, etc, we absorb energies that may nourish or diminish us.

Many have experienced feeling completely drained after an argument, a rough day at work, or an encounter with an energy vampire (re: your ex, frenemies, the always complaining boss/coworker). Reiki is a way to essentially recharge and reset your energies, while chasing away the negativity.

Massage Therapists Are Not Answering The Phone! What's Going On???

Image
Have you ever tried calling all over town to book a massage, and no one is answering their phones? Is it impossible to get a call back? You'd be tempted to believe that all massage therapists are complete flakes, right? Well, maybe, but the truth may be a bit more complex.

Benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage

I found an excellent article about the 4 Benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage By Christina DeBusk August 12, 2015 that was published in Massage Magazine. The original article is posted here: http://www.massagemag.com/4-benefits-of-a-deep-tissue-massage-31796/. Benefits include Stress Relief, Pain Relief, Improved Movement, as well as lower heart rate and blood pressure. To learn more, continue reading:

Be Your Own Advocate on the Massage Table

Image
A friend of mine, who travels extensively, recently reached out to me to ask a question. While visiting another country, she went in for a facial and massage. She was expecting a facial, and perhaps a neck and shoulder massage. What she received was a much more involved massage, that included a breast massage. She felt very strange about the entire encounter, and was not sure what she should do.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Image
As many of my clients have experienced, I offer a very deep tissue massage. I do not stick to a particular technique with massage, primarily because I listen to the body and adapt to what is required. I incorporate many techniques such as Swedish, Trigger Point Therapy, Lomi Lomi, PNF Stretching, Deep Tissue/Medical Massage, Rolfing (*note, I am NOT a certified Rolfer), and, my personal favorite, Myofascial Release Therapy, to which this particular blog will discuss. Collectively, I consider my massage to be Therapeutic Massage.

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Image
According to the article Deep Tissue Massage Benefits plus tips to get the most out of one By Cathy Wong, ND, Alternative Medicine Expert on About Health, "Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles)." It works by applying direct, and deep pressure to the muscles to release adhesions, soften the myofascial layer, and ease muscle tension.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Image
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD)  Is a massage technique that encourages the natural drainage of lymph which carries metabolic waste from the tissues to be recycled through the bloodstream. This is a particularly useful technique for addressing edema (swelling). While MLD may be incorporated during a massage to address conditions like swollen ankles and feet, or to address swelling due to an injury, most commonly, it is recommended post surgery.

I'm happy because I know that I have a light day, and could probably fit another person in. I watch as the light dims and the screen goes dark. I finish my massage appointment, hoping that they listened to my voicemail instructions and either left a clear and articulate message (so I can receive a transcription via text) or preferably, a text message. Alas, as I grab my phone and leave the treatment room, I am left only with a missed call. I know I have roughly 15 minutes between my client dressing, rescheduling, checking out, and setting up my table before beginning my massage with the next client. I am left with a choice:

Scenario 1: I call the number. I receive their voicemail. They sound nice. I leave a voicemail that I am returning their call and wanted to know if they were trying to book a massage. I go back …

What happens during a session: During a Reiki session, you will lie on the table, fully clothed and facing up. You may cover yourself with a blanket for your comfort. You will be directed to close your eyes and relax, while doing a mental "check in" with your body. The practitioner may utilize a pendulum …

Have you ever tried calling all over town to book a massage, and no one is answering their phones? Is it impossible to get a call back? You'd be tempted to believe that all massage therapists are complete flakes, right? Well, maybe, but the truth may be a bit more complex.

First, you have to understand the nature of the business you are attempting to contact. Most people who do not get regular massage, may become very frustrated at the seeming lack of professionalism. Massage Therapists work in several different establishments, and where they are located may dictate how responsive they are to your calls.

1. Salon / Day Spa: Spas usually have multiple professionals like hairdressers, nail techs, and massage therapists that work in the location. Due to this, they will usually have a receptionist to answer the telephone. Massage Therapists may or may not be on staff, so you may not be able to secure an immediate appointment, because therapists tend to work by appointment only.

2. Massag…

Massage is known for its ability to help the mind and body relax—and that alone makes getting massage advantageous. Deep tissue massage may bring your clients other benefits as well. To help you understand these, it first helps to understand what a deep tissue massage is.

Deep tissue massage is a technique that focuses primarily on the deeper layers of muscles and the fascia. Sometimes this technique involves the therapist using firmer pressure in order to reach these key areas and get them to release, which is why this particular massage is oftentimes recommended for people who are comfor…

A massage is a very personal thing. You are entrusting your care, health, and naked body to another person. That is the very reason that licensed massage therapists undergo training and a background check before receiving their license. Sadly, our industry has been subjected to unscrupulous and inappropriate therapists and clients, who try to use the massage room as an excuse to indulge in illegal activity.

A Letter To My Love Upon Leaving

Image
I am only an hour away from you, and I can feel an unsettled pit in my stomach. I know that we will only be a part for a week, and yet this feels as if it's forever. I haven't felt this kind of ache in many years. I love our new home together, and I hate that I must leave you to take care of business.
